Abstract
The RADICAL project aims to elevate sustainable advanced manufacturing by enabling high-strength aluminium alloys, specifically for large-scale parts. It integrates innovative computational alloy design and advanced novel wire manufacturing techniques to address the challenges of using 7xxx series aluminium alloys in additive manufacturing for the aerospace industry. It aims to produce defect-free components with superior strength-to-weight ratios by overcoming the current drawback of feedstock availability in wire-based directed energy deposition processes, bridging research with real-world applications aiming top quality electron-beam and distributed cold metal arc processes. It also employs cutting-edge recycling methods to convert high-value aerospace-grade aluminium waste into premium feedstock, which is expected to reduce material waste by 40% and lifecycle emissions by 20%. The consortium comprises SMEs, RTOs, and a leading aerospace company, promoting international collaboration to drive innovation and market readiness. RADICAL envisions a future where advanced manufacturing standards prioritize sustainability, driving economic growth and redefining possibilities in various industries. With its ambitious goals and focus on sustainability, RADICAL is set to make a significant impact.
