Abstract
The REFLOW project addresses the technological, environmental, and economic challenges of recycling cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), with only 5% of the 250,000 tons of XLPE being recycled annually in Europe. Existing methods like pyrolysis and milling are energy-intensive and yield inferior recycled materials unsuitable for high added-value products and demanding applications. REFLOW innovates with a low-temperature de-crosslinking process, significantly reducing energy use and enhancing recycled XLPE properties to match virgin material (15–25 MPa tensile strength). It integrates IoT analytics for real-time quality control, ensuring process consistency and recycling efficiency. To validate the secondary material, REFLOW develops modular wastewater filtration systems from recycled XLPE, achieving over 90% pollutant removal and complying with the EU Water Framework directive. These innovations promote sustainable manufacturing, industrial circular economy practices and generate a very large business opportunity by solving one of the biggest plastic recycling challenges in Europe.
