ARCADE will establish a new European manufacturing platform for advanced wound dressings that address the growing burden of wound infections and antimicrobial resistance by moving away from conventional, biocide‑releasing technologies. The project brings together Amferia as technology owner and product developer and Adhex as industrial manufacturing specialist to jointly design, install and validate a dedicated roll‑to‑roll coating line for next‑generation antimicrobial hydrogel wound dressings that use surface‑bound antimicrobial peptides to provide a safe, non‑releasing antibacterial activity aligned with antimicrobial stewardship.
Building on a jointly developed, modified lab/pilot‑scale manufacturing setup at Adhex, which has been sufficient for early small scale commercialisation in animal health and proof‑of‑concept but is not efficient or robust enough for large‑scale, multi‑product, regulation‑ready manufacturing, ARCADE will replace this laboratory‑derived pilot setup with an integrated, efficient, purpose built industrial line. The novel, state of the art coating line will be implemented in a cleanroom in Adhex’s facility in France and engineered to meet the specific needs of soft, temperature‑sensitive hydrogels and functional antimicrobial surfaces, including controlled coating, gel formation and curing, and the integration of multiple dressing configurations.
Amferia and Adhex will work in close collaboration to translate clinically and regulatorily driven product requirements into concrete process windows, process control strategies and in‑line/off‑line quality checks that support stable, high‑quality production of several product variants suitable for HUMAN medical device markets. Within this collaboration, Amferia contributes with the proprietary and antimicrobial hydrogel platform, target product profiles, clinical and market requirements, test methods and regulatory strategy, while Adhex contributes its expertise in cleanroom roll‑to‑roll coating, equipment integration and process validation within its medical‑grade quality management system.
In parallel, the project targets substantial improvements in material and energy efficiency compared with the current pilot process, including reduced waste of critical functional components, lower scrap rates and more efficient cleanroom operation, aligning the new manufacturing concept with net‑zero industrial practices. By bridging the gap between laboratory‑pilot production and industrial‑scale, regulation‑ready manufacturing, ARCADE will create an advanced manufacturing platform that strengthens both companies’ positions in wound care and provides healthcare providers and patiens with next‑generation antimicrobial dressings based on European technology.
