Abstract
CARVE (Closed-loop Arc-based Manufacturing with Real-time Vision & Enhancement) aims to develop advanced, AI-driven closed-loop control systems for Directed Energy Deposition-Arc (DED-arc) processes – an innovative leap beyond current industry standards. The project will enable precise control of the melt pool dimension, temperature, and deposition rates, enhancing the process stability and enabling local material property manipulation by integrating machine learning algorithms and simulation-based predictions, establishing closed-loop principles for wire-arc additive manufacturing processes using real-time vision-based control. This approach not only facilitates localized material property manipulation but the integration of in-line profilometers for real-time quality assurance also leverages the manufacturing of the parts and their final quality. Since the process parameters are continuously refined through computational models, CARVE ensures enhanced geometric accuracy, reduced energy consumption, and increasing first time right production and hence improve quality yield for large, complex metal components.
